Biograph mCT · Siemens Healthineers
A truly hybrid PET/CT system engineered for clinical flexibility, maximum patient access, and dual-use revenue — with the industry's only 78 cm bore, full high-end CT capability, and the most advanced PET detection chain available.
True Dual-Use System
Biograph mCT is engineered as a true dual-modality solution — not a PET scanner with a limited CT component. It delivers all the functionalities of a high-end standalone CT alongside best-in-class PET performance, requiring just one room and one team.
Built on reliable, sustainable, and proven LSO-based technology, Biograph mCT starts you from a position of clinical power. Our foundation spans the entire Biograph family of scanners and supports all available PET tracers for the broadest range of indications.
80% market share of lutetium-based scanners in 2015
The 78 cm bore and 135 cm tunnel streamline user experience and address a broader patient population — including bariatric patients and those requiring radiation therapy positioning accessories. A design built deliberately on key clinical technology.
24% more space than industry standard bore
Evolve with the changing healthcare market. Biograph mCT's scalable PET/CT platform opens doors to new service lines — from oncology and cardiology to pediatrics and radiation therapy planning — helping maximize and protect your investment for the future.
Available in CT configurations up to 128 acquired slices
Five-Layer Technology Chain
The value of PET/CT is in the details. Each technology in the Biograph mCT detection chain builds on the last — from the individual crystal element to the final reconstructed image — to deliver excellent lesion detectability, spatial resolution, and quantification accuracy.
The only company to grow and individually select LSO crystals in house. LSO scintillates faster and has higher light output than BGO — enabling better image quality, Time-of-Flight capability, and compatibility with all available PET tracers.
Faster scintillation · Higher light output vs. BGO
LSO crystals are cut to just 4 mm elements and arranged with no gaps between detector blocks — providing very high spatial resolution. This smaller crystal size reveals structures not visible at 6.3 mm; in one head and neck case, two additional small lesions were identified.
36% smaller crystals · 2× more elements per scanner
The extended axial FOV configuration adds 33% more detector elements, resulting in more than a 70% increase in count rate performance. This enables either half the injected dose or two times the scan speed — without compromising image quality.
↑ 70% count rate · ½ dose or 2× speed
LSO's short decay time enables measurement of the time difference between the two annihilation photons. This timing information can offer up to 200% improvement in signal-to-noise ratio — for better image quality, lower dose, or faster scan speed. 99% of all Biograph mCT systems sold in 2016 included TOF.
Up to 200% SNR improvement
High-quality raw data from the LSO detectors and Time-of-Flight is reconstructed using measured point spread functions (PSF) in an iterative algorithm. HD•PET more precisely accounts for the line of response positioning — yielding visually sharper clinical images.
PSF modeling · Sharper LOR positioning
Open Design
The changing healthcare landscape demands systems that accommodate a broader patient population, offer expansion into new service lines, and deliver a streamlined working environment for staff. Biograph mCT's design addresses all of these today.
The industry's only 78 cm bore provides 24% more space than the industry standard. It accommodates bariatric patients, allows easy positioning of radiation therapy accessories, and reduces patient discomfort during examination — for a broader referral base and greater revenue.
A short 135 cm tunnel reduces claustrophobia and improves patient comfort, allowing more room for positioning and accessories. Water cooling eliminates the need for noisy fans and overly cold air conditioning, creating a calmer environment for patients and staff alike.
The zero-differential-deflection patient bed supports up to 227 kg (500 lbs) and provides accurate registration between external lasers and both CT and PET fields of view. TG-66 compliant for radiation therapy, with integrated physiological inputs for a clutter-free environment.
Clinical Service Lines
Biograph mCT is configured to address the most challenging clinical situations — giving you the opportunity to open new service lines, maximize referrals, and grow your return on investment across oncology, cardiology, pediatrics, and radiation therapy.
The fast, high-resolution PET scan enables detectability of small lesions without compromising scheduling. Sub-millimeter OptisoHD crystals reveal lesions that 6.3 mm systems miss — directly improving staging accuracy, therapy planning confidence, and follow-up quality for a wide range of tumor types.
HD•PET + TOF: sharper images across all oncology indications
PET/CT usage in radiation therapy planning has increased fivefold since 2006. The Biograph RT Pro edition takes full advantage of the system's large bore, zero-differential-deflection bed, and premium PET technologies — delivering accurate target volume delineation for personalized treatment strategies.
88% of RT sites now incorporate PET into their planning protocols · 5× growth since 2006
Cardiac imaging demands high count rate capability because of the short half-life of cardiac tracers. Biograph mCT's LSO detectors handle high injected doses accurately — enabling PET-based perfusion or myocardial blood flow examinations that BGO-based systems struggle to perform reliably.
47% increase in cardiac PET imaging in the U.S. from 2011 to 2017
Pediatric patients are particularly sensitive to radiation exposure. Biograph mCT's 70 kV protocols and Adaptive Dose Shield minimize dose while maintaining image quality — making the system well suited to attract pediatric referrals and serve this population safely across multiple examination cycles.
